The YKK Group is a Japanese group of manufacturing companies. As the world's largest zipper manufacturer, YKK Group is most famous for making zippers; however, it also manufactures other fastening products, architectural products, plastic hardware and industrial machinery.

The initials YKK stand for Yoshida Kōgyō Kabushiki gaisha ("Yoshida Manufacturing Corporation"), which was the name of the company from 1945 until 1994. YKK produces fasteners and architectural products at 109 YKK companies in 71 countries around the world.

It is believed that the first prototype of the modern "zipper" was developed by the American Whitcomb Leo Judson.
The invention of such a fastener is associated with a very touching story. A friend of Whitcomb Judson suffered, saving a girl from a burning house. Jumping from the second floor window, he injured his back. And even after the treatment, some of the actions were difficult for him: for example, it was difficult to bend down to lace up the shoes. So he asked his friend, who had by that time already 12 patents for inventions, to somehow help with this disaster. Judson proposed a version of the fastener with hooks and loops and a special lock that allowed one hand to handle the fastener. This invention was presented to the public in 1893, but it turned out to be difficult to manufacture and unreliable. After many complaints the company practically went bankrupt.

In 1906, the leading designer of the company became an American engineer of Swedish origin - Gideon Sandback. He perfected the clasp and modified it to a modern look: he fixed the hooks and loops on a tight tape. Changed the shape of the links, and also increased the number, and therefore reduced the size of individual units (from 4 per inch to 10 or 11). In 1913, the first version of the "split" fastener was introduced, followed by the second. In 1917 he received a patent for the invention of a "split" fastener.

The introduction of this version of the fastener was more long and painful than the very development of the "zipper", because of mistrust from the manufacturers who remembered the first unfortunate experience. However, over time, the "zipper" has proven its reliability and manufacturability. Then came its modern name - English. Zipper. In the 1930s, the "zipper" became very popular, at that time the leading company for the production of "zipper" Japanese YKK was founded.
